The first, and perhaps most crucial, elements of culture we will discuss are its values and beliefs. They are actually guides to our behaviour. Norms determine, guide, control and also predict human behaviour. The first type, called nonmaterial culture, includes the values, beliefs, symbols, and language that define a society. Besides this all norms can be subsumed under three major concepts: folkways, mores and customs.Mores is a term used to denote behaviour patterns, which are not only accepted but prescribed too. Values give direction to the way that individuals, organizations, and societies act; what they strive for; and what they deem important. These elements of culture are discussed next. A norm is a rule or standard that governs our behaviour in the social situation in which we act and operate.it is a pattern setting limits on individual behaviour. Without social norms, we individuals must be taking decisions all time whenever we interact with the other individuals. They first must internalize the social norms and values that dictate what is “normal” for the culture; then they must socialize, or teach norms and values to, their children. In a state where existing social norms contradict each other or face a collapse, people feel detached from their own fellows.at this instance; people are inclined to pursue their private preferences without regarding the interest of the society as a whole. Men may engage in purposeful or goal oriented rational action (zweckrational); their rational action may be value-oriented (wertrational); they may act from emotional or affective motivations, or finally they may engage in traditional action. The second observations are communal and associational norms. There are both private and social norms. Norms give cohesion to the society. When people observe the norms of society and uphold its values, they are often rewarded. Values help shape a society by suggesting what is good and bad, beautiful and ugly, sought or avoided. They are specific prescriptions of how an individual ought to behave to be consistent with the values of contemporary society.
