O.T.T. Ellen Thomas strips a man of his shirt on an episode of OTT (Over The Top) - an adult version of Saturday morning children's show Tiswas. Watching adults being completely childish has a relish all its own. A definitive line-up of Tiswas presenters regrouped for a resurrection of Tiswas on the ITV Telethon of 1988. The first viewers got to know of the shows' existence, was on Chris Tarrant's final stint on Tiswas - 28th March 1981 (the last show of series 7, and also marking a departure for Lenny Henry, Bob Carolgees and John Gorman). Not so famous, but no less instrumental, for launching Lenny Henry's TV career. Presenter/performer John Gorman wrote the first three (Published in the Autumn of 1979, 1980, 1981), with Ollie Spencer writing the 1983 edition (prepared Spring 1982 and published Autumn 1982 featuring presenters and characters from the final 1981-82 series). This person was Matthew Lewis, formerly known as Matthew Butler, who performed his unique rendition of the song back in 1980 on Tiswas when he was aged five. The first few shows had a game slot where contestants would be randomly gunged and/or dropped into a tank of foam. Commonly referred to as "an adult version of Tiswas", although participant Bob Carolgees corrected me when I used that term - it was, apparantly, just a "late night" version. The theme tune was recorded by Roy Wood and was released as a single. Spin-off companies play an important role in the commercialization of university research results. Chris Tarrant was retained as the anchor presenter, and behind the scenes was annoyed with the changes, particularly the inclusion of a woman as presenter. It was cancelled by ATV's successor company Central in 1982, but spawned a short-lived late-night spin-off called OTT - Over The Top. (Arguably, even late-night zoo programmes like The Word drew on it). However, the acronym found more favour as the official title. Incredibly influential on other Saturday morning kids' shows—Dick & Dom in da Bungalow, SMTV Live, Ministry Of Mayhem, even Live And Kicking would not have been the same without Tiswas. On the programme, Birmingham folk-singer and comedian Jasper Carrott was to introduce the nation to the "Dying Fly Dance" and also to many local hospital casualty wards as the dance at one point soared high in the RoSPA list of common causes of household injury. ATV management were displeased with the visual slapstick element - the hurling of custard pies and water. A magazine counterpart was produced with interviews with cast, quizzes and letters. Furious left-wing comedian Alexi Sayle also joined the team. It was created by ATV continuity announcer Peter Tomlinson (later to become a regular presenter on the show) following a test period in 1973 when he tried out a few competitions and daft stuff between the programmes. Alexei Sayle eventually left the show towards the end of its 13 edition run, frustrated when Chris decided to give some airtime to controversial comedian Bernard Manning. ("Over The Top") was a late-night adult version of the anarchic ATV children's show Tiswas, which was made by its ITV franchise successor Central Independent Television. Content-wise, it is very similar to the previous two compilations, with many sketches being performed by the Tiswas team. Issued in October 2005 by Network DVD, The Best of Tiswas was a straight DVD issuing of the three VHS compilations - Best of the Best Bits, More of the Best Bits and Comedy Capers. It was crude, lecherous and gleefully tasteless. Tiswas characters from the team found a home - plenty of Algernon Razzamatazz, and the odd showing of Gorman's PC Plod. Producer Peter Harris would leave the show in the summer to help produce another cult TV success - The Muppet Show, at ATV's London-orientated operation in Elstree. Out of the cult Saturday morning shows that were focused on, Tiswas was significantly the most prominent, with many clips shown from it, and even a re-enactment of two Tiswas staples - the Cage and the Pass The Pie game. It was broadcast at 11.00pm on Saturday nights for one series in 1982. With a wealth of clips and reminiscences from the many stars who appeared on the series, the team will recreate the chaos and mayhem of those heady days of the show that broke the mould. would have fitted in perfectly with the likes of The Word, Eurotrash, The James Whale Radio Show and other shows that capitalised on the audience for late night bad taste and outrageousness. The only regular Tiswas presenter left was Sally James, who stayed on for series 8. One noticable difference from its followers, however, is that most presenters since have tended to be cheeky big brother types in their teens or early twenties, while all the Tiswas presenters except Lenny Henry were in their 30s at least. Midway through this series, Chris Tarrant decided to leave upon the series' conclusion.
