I've only read one of Kevin Brooks' novels before, the desolate yet enthralling "The Bunker Diary", which is one of my favorite books I've read in a while. Martyn realises that Alex had murdered Dean by cutting his brake lines and cannot quite believe it. As they play scrabble, they plan what they’re going to do the next day – get some of the cash and buy things, maybe look into booking a holiday. I suppose there are places and neighborhoods like the one in this book, where it rains or snows all the time and everyone is drunk (or maybe with that weather, drunkenness is a foregone conclusion), but I'll be happy never to run across it again, in real life or in a book.I liked Martyn because it has a lot of tension and there were jokes too. I was quite let down.Kevin Brooks was born in 1959 and grew up in Exeter, Devon, England. Martyn then begins to collect Dean’s hair and his discarded cigarette butt and puts them into an envelope. I was quite let down.This had a lot of potential to be much better than it actually was. One night when he is drunk Martyn pushes his drunken father causing his father to loose balance, fall over and crack his skull and die.
The only way we see anything else of her character is through his descriptions of her actions.
So understandably, I had somewhat high expectations for this, despite the fact that this book is much, much older than "The Bunker Diary." Martyn doesn’t like him and he’s jealous of his relationship with Alex. Martyn's father is a horribly mean father who gets drunk every night and occasionally hits his son.
I can understand Martyn's total lack of moral character -- look who he had as a model. Nothing stops, the rest of the world goes on.”
