His father is concerned about the show's sexual influence, especially the boy's fascination with a spanking scene. But it is an honest look at friendship and something that isn't too often captured on film. Does Mark feel like he made a mistake in getting married? It's that kind of film.
And when Mark and Kurt finally locate the turn-off to the springs, we see the sky reflected in their windshield and the Kurt obviously yearns to reconnect with Mark, and with the past, in some way, and he's saddened and frustrated that he can't.
Part of it's political -- living in a blue state (in every sense), depressed into a condition of learned helplessness by elections and events, while the impotent callers on the radio drone about the possibility of a third party and bemoan the nonexistence of a second party. Directed and edited by Kelly Reichardt; written by Jonathan Raymond and Ms. Reichardt, based on the short … We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future.Theater box office or somewhere else Kelly Reichardt's superb Old Joy is a film of rare beauty unburdened by typical male-bonding clichés, more the "big chill out" than The Big Chill. He's about to become a father.Kurt (and it's OK to make the connection to another young blond man named Kurt from the Pacific Northwest) thinks of himself as a spiritual seeker, but that may be because he still smokes way more dope than any of his old friends, most of whom he's lost contact with. Old Joy tells the story of two friends, Kurt (Will Oldham) and Mark (Daniel London), as they reunite for a weekend camping trip in the Cascade mountain range and Bagby Hot Springs, east of Portland, Oregon.Kurt lives a hand-to-mouth hippie lifestyle, while Mark has moved on from that scene and gotten a proper job and a house.
Now I can't wait to watch Wendy and Lucy. Both Kurt and Mark behave as if they'd had this same conversation a million times before. | Rating: 4/5
| This film was my first foray into the work of the well-respected Kelly Reichardt. January 26, 2007 They champion peace and understanding for the world but for themselves don't know how to find either one. | Whoa, Keanu
Thoughtfully curated and ethically sourced gift boxes for all occasions. Scorning the demands of her overbearing ...
film feels just right in the way it evokes the simple truths about human connection and disconnect and everything in between
There's really no answer to any of this, just an open invitation to watch and contemplate, to feel what is going on without any concrete sense of the history behind it.
For a few lyrical stretches in Kelly Reichardt's beautiful Old Joy, there's a sound you rarely hear in American movies—silence, or at least the gentle assertions of nature when people aren't yapping over it. You must be a registered user to use the IMDb rating plugin. The rest of the film is a languid road trip through the Oregon woods to the spring. Kurt carries things along with his pot-fuelled theories and stories, giving the audience plenty to laugh at and making Mark steadily more uncomfortable. | Rating: 3/5 90% of the film is shot in the wild, and it struck me as Herzog-esque in more than one occasion.
When the film comes to an end, nothing is really answered. Despite its modest funding, Old Joy was a huge success at Sundance and several other film festivals.
September 15, 2013 Reichardt uses clean and simple cinematography to illustrate the starkness of Mark and Kurt's faded friendship.
The soundtrack features original work by the band Yo La Tengo, and their lilting instrumental score provides a calming backdrop to this otherwise tension-filled drama. The lives of three women intersect in small-town America, where each is imperfectly blazing a trail. Everything We Know About
Guys like this make a real statement about their politics with their appearance and behavior.
By creating an account, you agree to the Marks seems to agree, looking more than a little appalled when Kurt starts to talk about how he is "so much more enlightened now" that he's back from one of his trips.
Old Joy. As expectant father Mark (Daniel London) and nomadic Kurt (Will Oldham) travel by car and foot into the woods in search of some secluded hot springs, their fumbling attempts to reconnect keep butting up against the limits of their friendship and the reality of how much their paths have diverged since their shared youth. "Old Joy" is a thoroughly boring and uninteresting art project that aims for something deep but only gives us the surface. No matter how you think a trip is going to turn out, there will always be some bumps in the road that you did not foresee. Old Joy is the sort of film that I like more as time goes by. A spare and satisfying experience. Old Joy feels like an old friend with its comfortable silences and gentle humour and its worth taking the trip with this film.
